Peanut Growers Also Watching Farm Bill

We tend to forget in the midwest that there is more than corn and soybeans to consider in the farm bill. The southern peanut growers are also actively working to get their share of support in this bill:

Peanut growers have seen progress recently in how Congress might treat them when the 2007 Farm Bill is completed, compared to how they were doing a few weeks ago.

Congressman Allen Boyd, D-Florida, said Monday that it was a hard-fought battle and it's not won yet, but through a concerted effort "a viable peanut program" is in the House version of the 2007 Farm Bill.

Boyd said he and Georgia congressmen, along with representatives of the peanut industry, were able to get the new Peanut Environmental Resource Stewardship Program put in the bill.

The PERS program will help to enhance the peanut industry by providing peanut growers with the support they need, while working with them to improve production practices, according to Boyd.
